A Colorado Springs man faces a possible life sentence in prison after admitting that he sexually assaulted five children at his wife’s unlicensed day-care service.

John “Jake” Fredrick Frey, 68, pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – one of 16 counts he faced in what authorities described as a pattern of sexual assaults on young girls at a now-shuttered home business on Congenial Place near North Carefree Circle and Oro Blanco Drive in northeast Colorado Springs.

Under terms of his plea agreement, Frey faces an indeterminate sentence of 15 to 20 years to life in prison. In Colorado, people convicted of certain sex crimes can be held beyond their prison terms, up to the rest of their lives, until a probation board determines they are no longer a risk to the public.

Frey was arrested in February after a young girl told her parents he had touched her “potty” when his wife left him alone with children while running errands
