A proposed public shooting range in Arvada, which faced serious public opposition, is being pulled from consideration, although Jefferson County officials plan to pursue an alternative site.
The facility, which would have featured 30 firing lanes, was proposed for the Blunn/Pioneer area of Arvada, at the southeast corner of Colorado 93 and Leyden Road.
In June, nearly Ralston Valley High School for a public meeting on the proposed range. Most of the people who spoke at the meeting opposed the range, citing noise and possible traffic issues, among other complaints; but some community members spoke on behalf of the need for a public range to serve Jefferson County.
On Friday, Arvada and Jefferson County officials issued a joint news release saying that they agree it’s currently “in the best interest of our community to cease further consideration of a public shooting range” in northwest Arvada on the city-owned Blunn/Pioneer property.
Consideration of the proposal also included an additional public meeting, along with online surveys and e-mails to city council members, county commissioners and city and county staff.
Friday’s release said research shows that an outdoor public shooting range is “needed” in Jefferson County, and that county officials will pursue an alternative site.
