Nuggets assistant coach Noel Gillespie is expected to become the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets’ new D-League franchise in Greensboro, N.C., The Denver Post confirmed.
Gillespie is in contract negotiations with the team, which is expected to be finalized soon. He has been with the Nuggets for three seasons, also doing advance scouting work, and is in Las Vegas with the Nuggets’ summer league team.
Gillespie has been in the NBA for 14 years, spending most of that time with the Phoenix Suns.
Denver’s coaching staff has been pilfered this summer. Chris Fleming received a position upgrade, moving into the No. 2 assistant seat with the Brooklyn Nets. Gillespie’s move puts him in the head coach’s seat, giving him the experience he needs as he moves forward in his career. Dee Brown is expected to land on another team’s bench as an assistant.
