Two unidentified men are seen walking a leashed lemur near the Carousel of Happiness in downtown Nederland on June 22.

An illegal pet lemur bit a 2-year-old girl in downtown Nederland on Wednesday afternoon, and while the toddler wasn’t seriously injured, police were looking for the exotic primate’s owner.

The bite was reported to police around 1 p.m. by an employee at the Carousel of Happiness, 20 Lakeview Drive, and responding officers quickly established what they referred to over police radio as “Lemur Command.”

Nederland police Chief Paul Carrill said the incident — which occurred on East First Street — is still under investigation. He said he could not reveal whether or not police had custody of the lemur, or knew its location.

“I’m not at liberty to disclose that,” Carrill said.

Carrill did confirm officers were still looking for the animal’s owner.
