The number of burglaries have increased sharply in Weld County.
So far this year, criminals in Weld County have committed 127 burglaries, a 60 percent increase from the 79 in Weld in 2015 from January through June, according to information from the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
“We don’t know what the rest of the year will bring, but so far the numbers are up significantly,” said Weld County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. Matt Turner on Thursday.
At the same time, sex offenses, robbery, arson, larceny and motor vehicle theft are down across the board more than 10 percent each. Even the total value of stolen property this year has gone down despite the higher number of burglaries, Turner said. The lower values of stolen items and other circumstances have led authorities to believe this rash of break-ins aren’t organized and appear to be random crimes of opportunity.
“This isn’t a reason for the community to be scared at all,” Turner said.
