Re: July 18 guest commentary.

Josh Horwitz and Eileen McCarron’s suggestion for saving lives with gun violence restraining orders is a great idea for Colorado. So many gun deaths result when people are in crises but haven’t yet broken any laws. Family members and close friends do see early signs of risk for harm to themselves or their loved ones but currently have no legal way to prevent these tragic outcomes. If the state could create this mechanism for an early response to signs of impending disaster by temporarily separating people from their lethal weapons, we would all benefit. Law enforcement would be enabled to ask the court for an order prior to a disaster rather than responding after the harm has occurred. By doing so, public health would be protected and needless deaths could be prevented.
