Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story on Monday was named National League player of the week for the week ending July 24, Major League Baseball announced.

The Rockies rookie shortstop blasted six home runs and 30 total bases for a 1.304 slugging percentage in seven games to lead all of baseball. He also tied for the league lead last week with 12 RBI and 10 runs.

The six home runs put Story’s total to 27 for the season, which established a new NL record for rookie shortstops, surpassing former Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki’s mark (24) from 2007. Wilin Rosario owns the Rockies rookie record with 28 home runs set in 2012.

The 23-year-old is now closing in on the MLB record for home runs by a rookie shortstop, 30 by Nomar Garciaparra in 1997.

Story went 11-for-23 (.478) and had a .571 on-base percentage last week, outpacing Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko, who hit .393 with seven runs, five home runs and eight RBI.
