Aurora police say they have taken a man into custody after he exchanged gunfire Monday morning with security guards manning an armored truck as he attempted to rob it.

The suspect has been taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, according to federal agents.

Investigators said the encounter happened about 7:45 a.m. at the Wells Fargo branch at 999 S. Sable Boulevard. No other suspects are being sought.

Police said their investigation would be turned over to federal agents — which responded to the scene — and the FBI’s Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force.

Deborah Sherman, spokeswoman for the FBI’s Denver office, said the wounded suspect has injuries believed to be non-life threatening. He was shot by guards manning the truck, she said.

No one else was hurt.

“(The suspect) ran to a nearby apartment complex, and the Aurora police department followed his blood trail,” Sherman said. “Eventually he surrendered.”

Sherman said the suspect is in his late 30s but declined to immediately release his name. She added that he has had prior run-ins with law enforcement.

Officer Diana Cooley, an Aurora police spokeswoman, told reporters at a news conference that authorities believe the suspect taken into custody was the only person involved in the attempted hold up.

Photos from the scene showed an armored Brinks truck parked near an automated teller machine that appeared to be damaged. Denver7 reported there were bullet casings scattered around the scene.

“I would say it’s pretty rare,” Cooley said of an armored truck being held up, “especially in our city.”
