A barefoot water skier died Sunday when a boom he was holding onto as the boat plowed through the waves at Standley Lake Regional Park tore away from the boat, according to the Westminster Fire Department.

“It became separated from the motorboat and injured him,” said Tony Calabrese, a department spokesman.

Barefoot skiers don’t wear skis. They sometimes hold onto a boom, which is a pole that hangs over the boat and allows them to ski alongside the boat.

The accident happened at shortly after noon Sunday.

Standley Lake Regional Park Rangers provided first aid when the skier was brought back to the dock.

“Sadly upon the arrival of EMS, the patient was found to have significant trauma and had succumbed to the injuries received,” according to a release from the Rangers.

The victim’s name and other information are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The accident is under investigation
