Re: “,” Aug. 4 news story.
As a voter in Rep. Mike Coffman’s district, I would be impressed by his “courage” in opposing Donald Trump if Coffman had not joined Trump in his attack on President Obama’s U.S. citizenship a couple years ago. Responding to a question from Tea Party members, Coffman questioned President Obama’s “possible” disqualification to be president because of his birth.
This was, of course, at a time when Trump’s favorite conspiracy theory that the presidentap Hawaiian birth certificate was a fake and, presumably, that he had not been born to the American citizen mother listed on that certificate. Itap hard to keep track of all of Trump’s conspiracy theories now — maybe thatap why Coffman has decided that he should challenge them?
I am not convinced. Sounds a lot like “I want to win my election” courage.

Re: “,” Aug. 5 editorial.
Your editorial lauding Rep. Mike Coffman for distancing himself from Donald Trump is disingenuous. I say this because Coffman is trying to have it both ways, and your editorial allows him to do so. While his much-touted television ad tries to separate him from Trump, Coffman has refused to rule out voting for him. This has been widely reported, but is not mentioned in your editorial. Coffman is in a tough position — polling numbers likely show Trump is unpopular in his district, but he cannot risk alienating his base. His solution: run an ad implying that he opposes Trump but stopping short of repudiating him outright or declaring that he will not vote for him. Voila — he has it both ways, and your editorial facilitates that outcome.

Rep. Mike Coffman says, “I’m a Marine. My duty is always to you. So if Donald Trump is the president, I’ll stand up to him. Plain and simple.”
Really? As a U.S. Marine, he answers to the commander in chief of the United States military, according to Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution. That would be the president of the United States. Is Coffman another one of those politicians who did not read it?
Every Marine takes an oath that includes, “I will obey the orders of the President of the United States … .” So which is it, Rep. Coffman?
