One of Boulder’s most colorful and notorious characters died Monday night before he was able to complete his final motorcycle stunt.

Terry Chesebro, better known as Evil Cheesey, died at the age of 61 at the Mesa Vista nursing home in Boulder, according to local filmmaker Jack Hanley.

Chesebro was a local legend for his daring (and illegal) street jumps on his motorcycle, often while sporting a cape. His nickname came after receiving stunter Evel Knievel’s blessing in the ’70s, albeit after Chesebro broke into Knievel’s house to request it.

That rebellious personality, and Chesebro’s quirkiness that reflected the fading light of the “old Boulder” ways, caught the eyes of local documentarians Hanley and Chris Leising.

They began collecting stories about Chesebro for a documentary called “Evil Cheesey Rides Again,” in which they intended to capture Chesebro’s return to the bike. One final ride.

Instead, as the filming went on, they ended up documenting his final days.
