Interstate 70 will be closed through Glenwood Canyon from 9 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced.
The closure is to allow for helicopter operations tied to emergency rockfall mitigation work, CDOT said.
Eastbound traffic will be closed at Exit 116 at Glenwood Springs. Westbound traffic will be stopped at Exit 133 at Dotsero.
Residential access to No Name will be maintained until 2 p.m. each day. Cottonwood Pass, Frying Pan Road and Hagerman Pass are not recommended alternate routes.
- Eastbound motorists from Grand Junction to the Front Range can take exit 116 to Colorado 82 to U.S. 24 to Colorado 91 to eastbound I-70. This route is only for vehicles under 35 feet in length.
- Front Range motorists and Summit County and westbound motorists can take Colorado 91 to U.S. 24 north on Colorado 82 to Glenwood Springs. This route is only recommended for vehicles under 35 feet in length.
- Front Range westbound motorists can take U.S. 40 from Exit 232 or Colorado 9 to U.S. 40 through Steamboat Springs.
Eagle County motorists can take Colorado 131 to Steamboat Springs, west on U.S. 40 to Craig, then south on Colorado 13 to Rifle and back to I-70. - South alternate route for west of Grand Junction or east of Vail can use U.S. 50 via Grand Junction for eastbound drivers and for westbound drivers by way of U.S. 24/285 through the Salida area from the Front Range.
Commercial vehicle parking will be available at Exit 133 (Dotsero). On the Exit 116 Glenwood Springs side of the closure, the Colorado State Patrol will be working to stage commercial motor vehicles on I-70.
The following width restrictions are in place on several of the alternate routes: Colorado 131 will have 8-foot width restriction and Colorado 9 north of I-70 will have 12-foot width restriction and Colorado 13 will have 10-foot width restriction.
Commercial vehicles are restricted from using Independence Pass, which has a 35-foot length restriction in place.
