Florence will serve as the setting for Robert Redford and Jane Fonda’s , beating out Cañon City for an adaptation of Colorado author  final novel “Our Souls at Night.”

The news, , comes on the heels of the state film commission’s announcement that Colorado is hosting (or will host) a number of significant film productions this year, including the Redford film, another Netflix original called “Amateur,” a creative reinterpretation of “Walden” and the throwback horror movie “Hoax.”

“We’ve chosen Florence … your fair city to portray the fictitious town of Holt, Colorado,” Netflix location manager Patrick Mignano told Florence City Council Monday night at a special meeting, according to The Record.

Florence, which has a population of about 3,800, is a town in south-central Colorado’s Fremont County that is home to the Administrative Maximum Facility “supermax” federal penitentiary. The prison has hosted notorious convicts such as Ramzi Yousef, who led the 1993 World Trade Center attacks, and Ted Kaczysnki, The Unabomber, and recently come under fire .

However, Mignano reportedly told city officials that it was the town’s charm that attracted the production to film there.

“There’s a coffee shop scene, a barber scene. And there’s a possibility we want to shoot in the bowling alley,” Mignano said, adding that casting calls will occur soon before the film’s Sept. 12 start date. “It’s a very calm movie, no crazy Hollywood stunts like explosions or police chases.”

Hollywood productions are rare but not unheard of in Colorado in recent years, from which filmed outside Telluride last year, to which filmed in Fountain in 2014.
