The Colorado Department of Education on Thursday . Test results include state-level scores for English language arts, math science and social studies assessments and the PSAT and SAT.

The department also released school- and district-level results for the PSAT, ACT and CMAS science tests.

To help understand what it all means, here is a breakdown of the testing structure.

CMAS stands for the which is the state’s new assessment system for elementary through high-school students. It incorporates new science and social studies tests developed by Colorado and new English language arts and math tests developed by the  (PARCC). CMAS social studies scores will be released later this year. PARCC is a group of states that use the same testing standards.

PSAT scores are for 10th-graders taking the practice SAT tests. This is the first year for Colorado sophomores to take the PSAT. The Scholastic Assessment Test is run by the non-profit organization The College Board.

SAT scores are for 11th-graders taking the SAT test for college entrance readiness.

ACT is a college entrance test that has been taken by Colorado juniors since 2001. Late last year, , and high school juniors will be required to take the SAT instead of the ACT.
