Put in an honest day’s work and receive an agreed-upon wage.
Simple?
Not necessarily.

Making sure that employers make good on compensating workers for sometimes grueling manual labor is but one of the services provided by this Denver-based nonprofit headed by Sarah Shikes. Other services include language, skill-building and leadership development classes, tool rental and access to El Centro’s computer lab, lockers and community kitchen.
Denver’s salon community, led by Charlie Price, Sara Brentano, Koko Brentano and the late Steve Trujillo, has taken El Centro under its collective wing, giving financial assistance by hosting Historias, a runway show that celebrates the creative genius of some of the city’s master stylists and clothing designers.
“If one listens to a border-crosser’s story, it’s impossible to begrudge them wanting a better life,” said Price, an award-winning stylist who is also a member of El Centro’s board of directors. “They’re people who just need a break.”
Cec Ortiz, president of El Centro’s board, and vice president Jesus Orrantia introduced a group of clients who reminded the 400-member audience that “We are human beings … strong and beyond labels. We are many colors, we have many stories, but we are one community.”
Historias 2016 was held at Exdo Event Center, and in addition to the show there was a silent auction, food from El Chingon Mexican Bistro and tunes spun by DJ Markie.
Fantasy hairstyles came courtesy of Artemis and Birch, Ted Medina, Marlene Romero, Mode, Planet Laboratories, Berenices, El Salon, Beto’s and The Look, with appearances and input by such salon industry giants as Sam Villa, an award-winning hairdresser, educator and developer of ergonomic styling tools; George Alderete, hair color director for Keune Haircosmetics; Jill Leitz, an international performing artist with Redken; and Javier Jaimes, a member of the Ted Gibson artistic team.
The guests included Esther DeJesus, Valerie Soto, Terese Jimenez, Brittany Gomez and James Mucker.
