A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle early Friday on an Interstate 25 frontage road in Weld County, authorities say.

Cpl. Matt Turner, of the county sheriff’s office, said the collision happened about 5:15 a.m. on the frontage road near Tipple Parkway, just west of Frederick. Turner said it appeared the pedestrian walked out into traffic and was struck.

The pedestrian was identified Friday as James Lutton III, 50, of Thornton.

Lutton was struck by a 2001 Jeep driven by a 53-year-old man who remained at the scene, according to the state patrol. The driver was not identified Friday. The fatal accident remains under investigation.

Investigators are requesting witnesses to the crash or anyone with information to call the Colorado State Patrol dispatch center at: 303-239-4501, reference case number 3A161586 or ask to speak to Trooper Dusty Kraft.

The State Patrol says the driver of the vehicle — a 2001 Jeep — that hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene. He was not injured.

“We’re still working everything,” said Trooper Josh Lewis, spokesman for the State Patrol. “Hopefully we’ll have more later.”
