Re: Aug. 12 news story.
I read with great interest the article about the terminally ill woman from California who held a party for her closest friends just prior to taking a lethal dose of drugs to free her from the agonizing death of ALS. I agree with her decision and am actively supporting all efforts to obtain the same right for Colorado residents.
It was distressing however to see the the words “assisted suicide” used to describe the actions of this courageous woman to take control of her own life. She did not do this because she wanted to stop living. She did it because she needed to stop the intolerable pain and suffering caused by her illness.
I watched my father die from cancer slowly and in constant pain which could not be relieved. He begged his doctor for enough medicine to end his pain and his life but of course was refused.
I made a promise that I would continue to pursue laws which would give every terminally ill person the right to make his own decision and to die comfortably and with dignity. This is a basic personal right which needs to belong to the people and not the government.
