As many performing arts companies wring their hands over declining attendance, Boulder Opera is taking the refreshing — if not entirely original — approach of offering a free, outdoor production of “Carmen” at the Glen Huntington Bandshell (a.k.a. the Boulder Bandshell) on Saturday, Aug. 20 in the style of The Metap summer series in Central Park.

The full production of Bizetap classic will feature a cast of local opera singers, a chorus and the Boulder Opera ensemble Orchestra under the baton of Parisa Zaeri and director Phoenix Gayles. Drinks (including wine) and food will be available for purchase.

While the event is free, organizers encourage people to register for the best seating at . The show begins at 6 p.m. at 1212 Canyon Blvd.
