BRIGHTON — Furmen Lee Leyba was sentenced Friday to 36 years in prison for his role in .
, 32, was convicted in June of aggravated robbery — a Class 3 felony — and three counts of being an accessory to a crime in the killings. He was acquitted of other charges in the case, including three counts of first-degree murder, according to prosecutors and court records.
17th Judicial District Judge Thomas R. Ensor said at the sentencing that Leyba’s long criminal record demonstrated that rehabilitation was not an option, according to the district attorney’s office.
“You are a criminal,” Ensor said. “That’s what you know and that’s what you like.”
According to prosecutors, Ensor added: “I have to protect this community and the only way I can do that is to lock you up.”
On Dec. 10, 2014, Johnny Angel Gutierrez, 18, Jason Albert Quizada, 37, and Jayson Antonio Figueroa, 17, were shot and killed at a home on Cragmore Street near the intersection with Broadway in unincorporated Adams County.
Leyba was one of two men charged in the slayings.Authorities believe , 42, who has been charged with more than 20 counts in the case, including first-degree murder, was the shooter. Flores is still going through the judicial system and is due in court Aug. 26 for a competency hearing.
Flores and Leyba took money, firearms, drugs and credit cards from those at the home during the fatal encounter, prosecutors say, leading to the robbery charges.
According to an arrest affidavit, a deputy who was among the first to respond to the scene found the three slain men in the homes with bullet wounds to their heads.
Both Flores and Leyba had long criminal records before their arrests in the triple killing. The pair also after they were taken into custody in the case, with Leyba being suspected of bringing drugs into the Adams County jail and Flores allegedly had a sharpened spoon and a tote box that appeared to have been fashioned into a hook in his cell.
