Two motorcycle riders were killed and a person riding in a car was rushed to hospital Sunday afternoon after a crash that forced the closure of U.S. 34 in Big Thompson Canyon west of Loveland for more than four hours.

The car and the motorcycle collided, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Tim Sutherland said.

CSP dispatchers received a call at 4:42 p.m. alerting troopers of the crash, Sutherland said.

State Patrol investigators still were at the scene at 9 p.m., and troopers were aiming to open the highway. All lanes were closed between the Dam Store near the bottom of the canyon to Mall Road near Estes Park.

No other details were available.
