A man who police say was armed and brandishing the weapon was fatally shot Thursday night by officers in Fort Collins.
The incident unfolded when police were called at 7:22 p.m. on a “domestic disturbance involving a weapon” in the 900 block of North Highway 287, according to a Fort Collins Police Department media release.
The caller, a woman, told police communications personnel that a man, who she knew, was armed and had been “menacing” her and several others before leaving the scene.
When officers arrived to interview witnesses, the suspect had returned and was “seen illegally entering the victim’s residence,” the release said.
Officers told the suspect to come out of the home. When he did, the suspect was “brandishing a weapon, refusing to comply with commands,” police said.
Officers fired a Taser at the man, who “continued approaching,” the release said.
“Officers then discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect,” police said. No officers were injured.
The man who was shot was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released.
Names of officers involved in the incident were not released.
The incident shut down a mile-long stretch of North Highway 287 for several hours.
The Larimer County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the fatal officer-involved shooting.
