COMMERCE CITY — This weekend’s Rocky Mountain Cup match could leave a permanent mark on the goalkeepers.
Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard this week said he and Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando are working out the details of a bet that could result in the two longtime friends tattooing each other.
“We’ve not hammered it out yet,” Howard said. “He gives tattoos and I can give a few tattoos in my day. So I’m sure we’ll figure out, whoever loses will have to give the other one something.”
The two ‘keepers are teammates on the U.S. national team and have been friends for 20 years. The two were roommates when they were with the Under-17 national team, Howard said.
Both goalkeepers are covered in body art, though Howard said he doesn’t consider himself a tattoo artist.
“If you’re dumb enough to let me tattoo you, I’m happy to do it,” Howard said. “I just enjoy the art of tattooing, mainly getting them, but I’ve given a few.”
Howard said he and Rimando talk frequently, but hadn’t talked this week heading into their first Rocky Mountain Cup meeting against one another. As for the bet, stay tuned for the details.
“I’m sure we’ll do something stupid,” Howard said. “We usually do.”
