Interview with Kaira Muchow, general manager
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
:I knew the people who own the business. I worked in retail for a long time, had my kids and then found out that this athletic store was opening right across the street from my house. I told the owners that I definitely wanted in on it.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
:Endurance House is an athletic shoe store, but we are also a bike store and a swim store. We have a full service bike shop, and we do movement profiles. We put customers on treadmills, record how they move and then put them into the correct shoes for the way they move. We’re a specialty running store, and we carry things that you can’t find at places like Foot Locker. We sit down with you and take the time to actually understand what you’re doing and what you’re trying to accomplish with your fitness goals.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
:I love that I get to build relationships with people and help inspire them to realize their dreams. I used to be 320 pounds, and last year I did an Iron Man. I love helping people learn new and different ways to exercise and get out and be healthy and try new things, whether it’s walking, running, biking, swimming or just getting outside.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
:The hardest thing is getting people to know where we are. Our location is pretty tucked away, and we want people to know that we’re not a gym. Sometimes that’s a misconception. We’re an actual retail store that sells running shoes and injury prevention materials and marathon-related gear for everyone.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
:Every Tuesday at 6 p.m. we have a group run for customers of all abilities. We run the lap on Huntington Trails and up through McKay Lake. Some people run 10 minutes out and 10 minutes in and others will do 4 to 6 miles on the trail right behind Lowe’s. We also have people come out to demo new types of running shoes for people of every age and walk of life. We also have training plans that we create for interested customers. We can help any athlete of any ability train for things like the Iron Man or marathons or half marathons — whatever their goals are.
