An that seriously injured a man happened after one of three workers installing new carpet plugged in a carpet iron, police said Friday.
The explosion threw all three workers off their feet, leaving one — a 56-year-old man — with upper body burns as well as other injuries. The home was severely damaged and is uninhabitable, authorities say.
Fraser/Winter Park police say they still don’t know exactly what caused the explosion and that the incident remains under investigation.
Police said Xcel Energy workers had checked the home earlier in the day and found no gas readings. A work crew for the utility was investigating some potentially higher readings across the street from the residence around the time of the explosion.
The explosion happened about 3 p.m. at a home on Fir Drive near Winter Park Resort.
An update on the injured worker, who was airlifted to University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, was not provided on Friday. Police say, however, that he is expected to survive.
The incident prompted several evacuations in the surrounding area.
“The actual cause of the explosion will take some time to determine, however the public is not in any danger,” police said in a news release.
