If only the sold-out Hall & Oates show Monday night at Red Rocks was as up-tempo, on-key and swinging as that .

Alas. Times have changed.

Darryl Hall and John Oates are closing in on 70 years old. And while they both have full heads of hair, slim figures and sparkly threads, the duo’s live show can’t hide their age.

After an energizing set from the evening’s second opener Trombone Shorty (had I known Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings were up first I would have gotten there earlier!), the name of the game became smooth and easu soft rock.

Wait a minute. Is Hall and Oates actually a soft rock band?

Sure, they played all the hits — “Rich Girl,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Sara Smile,” “Maneater.” But the songs seemed to be in slow-motion, the voices singing them resembling that one guy at karaoke who keeps dipping an octave lower to avoid out-of-reach high notes.

Then again, so what?

The crowd didn’t care, even despite the cold sleet misting down on us throughout the night. It was Hall & Oates. It was entertaining. It was slow-dancing, good memories and that irreplaceable feeling of hearing one of your favorite songs live, even if it didn’t sound the same as you remember.

Those are some of the best reasons to buy a ticket to a concert.

But hopefully next year, you won’t have to throw down to see them. At this point, they’re a better fit for a free, Taste of Colorado concert than the pomp of Red Rocks.
