A portion of U.S. 285 through western Jefferson County was renamed on Wednesday in honor of fallen sheriff’s Sgt. Sean Renfro, who was as he stopped to direct traffic after a car crash.
A commemorative sign was unveiled at a morning ceremony, dedicating a seven-mile stretch of the route as “Sergeant Sean P. Renfro Memorial Highway.”

Renfro was off-duty on Jan. 3, 2015, when he stopped to help passengers of a vehicle that had crashed. As he was assisting, a , crossed the center median and collided with the vehicle Renfro was standing near, killing him and injuring two others.
Renfro’s widow, Crystal, said at the dedication ceremony that the memorial sign will keep her husband’s memory alive and hopefully encourage other to drive safe, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver who killed Renfro — Blair Gledhill — to 10 days in jail, two years of supervised probation and 240 hours of community service.
