Re: “,” Sept. 13 letter to the editor.
I read with amusement a sentence from Tim Gaudette’s letter to the editor. He wrote, “I talk to small business owners all over the state, and many say they support a higher minimum wage because it reduces turnover and increases productivity, which is good for their bottom line.” I am perplexed by this argument — not because I don’t think itap true, but because of the implication that it takes a state law for someone to increase minimum wages. I would think that if an employer raised wages to $12 an hour (or more), then the same purpose would be accomplished: employee turnover would decrease and productivity would increase. Would this not put the employer ahead of other small businesses and in a position to compete with larger companies that have increased minimum wages? Does it really take a state law for someone to do what is “right”?
