Former Valor Christian star and Stanford junior running back Christian McCaffrey made a national splash last year when he shattered Barry Sanders’ NCAA record for all-purpose yards with 3,864, propelling him to a second-place finish for the Heisman Trophy.

Here’s a look at how he performed last week and what the national media is saying about him and the Heisman race.

How did Christian do last week?

In a 27-10 win over Southern California, McCaffrey had 30 carries for 165 yards and a touchdown, and four catches for 73 yards and another TD. He also had a kick return for 22 yards, giving him 260 total all-purpose yards — his eighth straight game with more than 200 yards.

How are Christian’s numbers on the year?

In two games, he’s totaled 480 all-purpose yards.

What the national media is saying

:

“It meant a lot,” McCaffrey said of his receiving TD, his first of the season. “I didn’t have to do a whole lot, I just ran out there. … [QB Ryan] Burns put it on the money and itap just my job to run it in there. It felt good to get a pass one in there.”

:

This was typical Stanford. A heavy dose of methodical mashing, a bit of everything from Christian McCaffrey and a couple little wrinkles that caught Southern California totally off guard.

Christian McCaffrey and the Stanford defense led the way, frustrating the Trojans with steadiness on both sides of the ball. This was a vintage Cardinal performance, which is why they are in the Pac-12 and national championship hunt seemingly every year.

:

What makes McCaffrey one of college football’s most feared players is his versatility. He is a dynamic runner, a dangerous receiver and an electric returner of punts and kicks. In short, he does everything. And he does everything especially well when he faces USC.

McCaffrey wrote a piece that ran Friday on The Players Tribune titled “.” Here’s an excerpt:

You prepare meticulously so that when the time comes, you don’t have to think. Itap about instincts and reactions. When the whistle blows and the ball is kicked off, I take a few deep breaths, focus and then explode.
