A domestic cat in Evergreen has tested positive for plague, Jefferson County health officials announced Monday.

Jefferson County Public Health says it’s not uncommon for cats to become infected with plague in an environment where plague is circulating. The cat is now under the care of a veterinarian.

Dave Volkel, the department’s health specialist, said the case should remind the public of the importance of keeping their pets from roaming free and using appropriate flea control products.

Plague is found in various species of rodents and rabbits and is transmitted by fleas, officials say.

“When an infected rodent becomes sick and dies, its fleas can carry the infection to other warm-blooded animals, including humans,” JCPH said in a news release. “People also can be exposed through direct contact with infected rodents, rabbits and cats.”
