A 43-year-old man has been charged with destroying government property after he allegedly scratched ballistic-grade protective glass at the Alfred A. Arraj Federal Courthouse in Denver, causing $110,000 in damage.
Steven. L. Harris faces up to 10 years in a federal prison for the alleged vandalism, according to Denver U.S. District Court records.
Harris allegedly scratched special glass windows designed to repel bullets on Sept. 13, according to court documents.
On that day at 9 a.m., Andrew Sabin, a federal protective service agent, asked Harris to leave the property after the man was seen loitering on the courthouse grounds, court documents show.
When Harris became aggressive, Sabin called Denver police. Sabin and a Denver officer escorted Harris off the property.
Sabin discovered the scratches a few hours later. When he reviewed surveillance video he saw Harris throwing an object at the courthouse and then using an object to scratch the windows, the documents show.
Harris was arrested Sunday afternoon after he returned to the courthouse grounds.
