Re: Sept. 24 guest commentary.
Donald Trump claiming the mantle of school choice is frankly stunning — and, to a reform-minded pro-public school choice Democrat, horrifying.
Letap be clear. What Trump and supporters like Ken Witt are pawning off as “school choice” bears zero resemblance to the progressive education policies that are working for kids in Colorado.
Trump’s plan would undermine everything we’ve worked so hard to build and derail our core mission of providing every child in Colorado equitable access to the world-class public education they deserve. He plans to gut nearly 30 percent of the federal education budget and hand it to states with no oversight or support from the Department of Education — which he plans to eliminate.
Our kids would be looking at fewer choices, less resources, larger class sizes, and a bankrupt education. Rather than support students, Trump would rather torch the rulebook and wipe his hands of any responsibility for their futures.
