GRAND JUNCTION — Prosecutors say a Grand Junction police officer was justified when he shot and killed a man who was holding two children hostage at knifepoint.
Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein says the officer believed the children were in imminent danger when he shot 44-year-old Simon Gomez on Sept. 4 after unsuccessful negotiation attempts.
Gomez’ wife called 911 and said he was paranoid and might hurt her 9-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy. Gomez was shot after he refused to remove knives from the children’s throats. The children were not physically injured aside from a small cut on the boy’s hand.
Gomez tested positive for alcohol and methamphetamine.
