All but one Denver area Albertsons store officially Wednesday.

That store, at  7450 S. University Blvd. in Centennial, will close Nov. 5, the grocer confirmed.

“We evaluate all of our stores on a pretty regular basis,” Safeway spokeswoman Kris Staaf said. “We’ve been looking at that store for quite some time and just made the decision, after we looked at ways to improve its performance, we needed to close the store.”

The final decision to close the store was made after the initial announcement in September that all nine Denver area Albertsons would be re-branded as Safeway stores, Staaf said.

The other eight Albertsons successfully made the transition to Safeway, with signage being changed out overnight Tuesday and the stores officially opening under their new banners Wednesday morning. The chain has invested than $15 million to remodel and update the stores, officials said.

The eight re-branded stores are located at:

  • 1200 S. Buckley Road, Aurora
  • 6100 S. Gun Club Road, Aurora
  • 323 S. Broadway, Denver
  • 200 Quebec St., Denver
  • 910 W. Cherry Ave., Louisville
  • 8434 S. Kipling Parkway, Littleton
  • 500 E. 120th Ave., Northglenn
  • 3840 E. 104th Ave., Thornton

A total of 64 employees will be affected by the Centennial store closure. Staaf said the company plans to make “every effort to place the affected employees at other stores.”

Located at the intersection of South University Boulevard and East Dry Creek Road, the Centennial store is less than a mile from three other grocery stores — a King Soopers, Whole Foods Market and Natural Grocers. The nearest Safeway is about two miles away, in the Southbridge Plaza Shopping Center at 181 W. Mineral Ave. in Littleton.

With the closure, Albertsons Companies will operate 113 stores in Colorado — 103 Safeways and 10 Albertsons. The re-branding was the last year.
