Denver Election judges survey and check voting ballots during a test of the ballot system in the counting room at the Denver Elections headquarters October 13, 2016.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey issued a reminder Thursday that itap illegal in Colorado to show your election ballot to other people and warned that state law makes it illegal to post ballot selfies on social media.

The law states: “No voter shall show his ballot after it is prepared for voting to any person in such a way as to reveal its contents.”

The don’t-show-your-ballot law originally had nothing to do with selfies and was designed to prevent fraud. Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams told CBS Denver that “the reason for [the law] is the possibility of selling a vote or trading that vote for something.”

The ACLU of Colorado argues that Morrissey is wrong about ballot selfies being illegal. According to the group’s legal director, courts in Indiana and New Hampshire recently upheld individuals’ rights to post them.

And seven other states have legislation that specifically allows people to take their pictures with their ballots and post them on social media.

Do you agree with Morrissey that ballot selfies should be illegal? Vote in our poll.
