Classes at Berthoud High School were canceled Thursday morning after Larimer County sheriff’s deputies searching for a missing boy found the body of a teen inside the school.

Deputies began searching for a missing teen boy early Thursday morning after his parents called authorities to report he had left his home and that they were worried about his safety. The parents told officials their son might have gone to the high school.

“Deputies responded to Berthoud High School and found an open door,” the county sheriff’s office said in a news release. “The body of a deceased teenage male was found inside the school.”

Larimer County Sheriff's deputies and the Larimer County Coroner's office investigate a body found at Berthoud High School on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016.

Authorities say the Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the teen’s identity as well as his cause and manner of death at a later time.

“There is no known threat to the school, students, staff or citizens living or working in the area,” the release said. “All necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the continued safety of Berthoud High School.”

David Moore, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, declined to release more information on the case.

Anyone with information on the death is asked to call the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office at 970-416-1985 or Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.

Investigators have not said whether the teen attended Berthoud High School.

“Right now, there’s really no other details I can share because the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is running an investigation,” said Mike Hausmann, spokesman for the Thompson School District.

Classes at Berthoud High School have also been canceled for Friday. A football game and a series of volleyball matches scheduled at the school for Friday have been moved to other schools.

Hausmann said counseling will be made available for students, staff and families Friday at the Berthoud Community Center.
