designated player has won MLS goal of the year for his Sept. 24 free kick strike against FC.

The Rapids’ 28-year-old Albanian attacker curled a left-footed strike around the Whitecaps wall from beyond the 18-yard box. The 75th-minute goal put the Rapids in front 3-2 at the time.

Gashi becomes the second Rapids player to win MLS goal of the year honors and the first since Marcelo Balboa won in 2000. The winner is selected by a vote of the fans — and Gashi took 75 percent of the vote in the final against NYCFC’s Jack Harrison.

The goal was perhaps not even Gashi’s best of the year — his against last week may have topped it, but the goal of the year award is only for regular season tallies.
