Larimer County has closed a section of County Road 31 near the Carter Lake dam until crews can remove a large section of the cliff that is at danger of falling onto the road.
Just north of the dam, a section of rock that is about 100 feet long and 35 feet tall has a large crack, estimated at 1 foot wide, that worried Larimer County officials enough to close the road on Monday.
“Over time it’s gone from a small crack to a large crack, and rocks have come loose,” said assistant county engineer Rusty McDaniel. “We’re starting to worry that the whole thing is going to come down. Our real concern is that the whole piece is going to shift and come down on the road.”
So, on Monday, the county closed Larimer County Road 31 between Larimer County Road 8E on the south and Carter Knolls campground on the north, a little more than a mile of roadway. Residents can still get to their homes through detours and access to recreation at the lake is still open, but officials realize the closure will increase some travel time.
McDaniel said the county is working with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to determine the best way to remove the rocks safely.
