Authorities in Montrose County have identified the 47-year-old Loveland man killed in a ڳٱԴǴDz.

William Ray Score Jr. died of a “distant” gunshot wound to the head in what has been ruled a homicide, officials said Tuesday.

Deputy Bruce Schmalz, a three-year veteran of the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office, was identified Tuesday as the officer involved in the shooting. He was struck by bullet fragments in his hand.

Schmalz has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the shooting.

The sheriff’s office says it is conducting an internal investigation, standard procedure for any officer’s response-to-resistance situation.

Score was pronounced dead at the scene of the encounter in the western part of Montrose County. Officials did not provide an exact location.

Investigators have not said what precipitated the shooting.
