A Boulder business is about to get a boost from one of the world’s most powerful women.

Juniper Books, a book curation and design firm, has landed two of its collections on the coveted Oprah’s Favorite Things list in her magazine, O — for the second year in a row.

Last year, Juniper’s collections of work by Ernest Hemingway and another of African American authors earned a coveted spot, propelled by the company’s in-house jacket designs.

“The book designs should tell a story just like the books themselves,” said founder and CEO Thatcher Wine. “They should tell the story of the book but also the story of the reader.”

This year, Oprah Winfrey herself requested new looks for collections by Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison, which they got courtesy of Denver street artist Detour.

Wine got connected with the artist after featuring Detour’s murals in a TED talk. Detour created the colorful murals specifically for Juniper.

“It’s definitely an honor to have my artwork included in such an iconic list,” he said. “For me it’s almost like making it to the next level to where now people all across the world will be viewing my art in such a creative way — on the spine of a book.”

Detour said he was ready for the increased exposure, though he wasn’t sure what to expect.
