Dozens of University of Northern Colorado students Wednesday afternoon demanded President Kay Norton step down during a protest near UNC’s central campus.
The group of about 50 students held signs and chanted, “Hey-hey, ho-ho, Kay Norton has got to go.” Students also held signs reading “Death to diversity,” and “We are not feeling safe.”

UNC spokesman Nate Haas said UNC officials were aware of the protest, as they are of similar protests around the state and country. He said the UNC Police Department was likewise aware, but they saw no reason to be there. “I think that says a lot about the protesters; they staged a peaceful protest, which they have a right to do,” Haas said. “We encourage, we foster that kind of debate and dialogue.”
Since Trump was elected president of the United States last week, students have reported increasingly hostile interactions with people on and around campus, including attacks against black and Latino students.
