Nine San Luis Valley residents ran into trouble when they posted video of themselves racing on country roads, often at speeds topping 100 miles-per-hour, to social media sites.
The group faces a combined 173 charges after the Colorado State Patrol busted them following a 10-month-long investigation of racing in the valley.
“The suspects provided video evidence of themselves racing side by side on local country roads,” according to a CSP news release. “Other video evidence observed via social media include suspects filming their speedometer while driving up to 165 mph on the same local county roads.”
The CSP initiated the investigation after receiving numerous complaints, the release said.
The nine are charged with illegal speed contest, illegal speed exhibition, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. Additional suspects are expected to be charged in the coming months.
A total of 557 people have died in crashes on Colorado roads this year, many of them caused by excessive speed, the CSP said.
