Emergency road repair on I-270 over Brighton Boulevard caused long lane and road closures Tuesday afternoon, leading to traffic issues.

Debris from a failed section of an I-270 highway bridge fell onto Brighton Boulevard below, causing a shutdown of the boulevard for safety concerns and a lane closure on the highway above as emergency repairs were carried out.

The shutdown happened about 1:30 p.m., and traffic in the area was rerouted. Delays were long as the repairs lasted into the night. One westbound lane of the highway was closed.

Brighton Boulevard was closed in both directions from East 56th Avenue to East 60th Avenue, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Work crews tore out a failed patch of road on the bridge and were pouring fresh concrete about 7:25 p.m., according to the highway department.

Reopening of the boulevard stretch and the lane on the highway were pending at 9 p.m. Tuesday, and a precise time had not been announced.
