Denver City Councilwoman Kendra Black wants to help her constituents get an early start on their New Year’s resolutions while also showing off the amenities in her district.
Black’s office in southeast Denver’s District 4 is preparing to launch a running club around the Highline Canal with the goal of participating in the races along Colfax in May. Black and council aide Liz Zukowski are training for the full marathon while others can train for the 5K or half-marathon races.
“I’d like us to have a strong showing at the Colfax event,” Black said.
Black is calling the group the Highline Canal Trailblazers and is welcoming anyone to join her running group starting at 9 a.m., Jan. 8 at the Highline Canal just behind the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 4300 E. Dartmouth Ave. The club will meet every Sunday at that time.
Denver Parks and Recreation will allow the center to be open during meeting times for people to use the bathroom and will also provide coaches to help people create a training schedule for during the week.

“As people over-indulge, they start thinking about New Year’s resolutions, and we want to get the word out early,” she said. “I really want to maximize the use of the public amenities we have in our district. I think one of our biggest assets is the Highline Canal.”
Those who join will need to pay a $5 registration fee to Denver Parks and Rec. A T-shirt will be provided.
