Avalanche goaltender , coming off a 51-save performance at Toronto, won’t suit up for the Wednesday night home game against Philadelphia because of a groin muscle issue.
Colorado will recall Spencer Martin from the San Antonio Rampage to be ‘s backup against the Flyers.
After the 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs, the Avalanche didn’t practice Monday, and Varlamov wasn’t on the ice Tuesday at Family Sports Center.
“Varly tweaked his groin, so he’s out day to day,” Colorado coach said. “I don’t think it’s anything major, but he’ll miss (Wednesday’s) game.”
Varlamov has had periodic groin muscle problems in the past that have sidelined him for significant stretches, but Bednar said he was “hopeful” this wouldn’t be a repeat. “Apparently, he’s feeling better today than yesterday, so I’m hoping it’s going to be shorter than what he’s had in the past,” Bednar said.
(illness) and (lower body injury) also missed practice, and with Colorado carrying only one extra forward, it would have to either recall a forward from San Antonio or suit up seven defensemen against the Flyers if neither can go. But Bednar said that at least as of the early afternoon, the Avalanche wasn’t planning on making another move there.
The Avalanche will go into the game against the Flyers with a 4-8-1 record at home. Pickard is 5-3-1 for the season with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage.
