I just read Vital for Colorado chair Peter Moore’s commentary on oil and gas development, including fracking, in Colorado. Although I do have concerns about fracking, I welcome opportunities to hear all viewpoints on the subject. I believe that Mr. Moore missed an opportunity to edify me and other readers by vilifying those who oppose his position while making his position seem heroic.
Examples of vilification: “fringe environmental groups,” “band of extreme voices,” “narrow agenda,” “flooded the community with smears and deceit,” to mention a few. His position: “forces of common sense,” “pushed back against these harmful proposals,” “responsible energy development,” “defeat of anti-fracking extremists.”
These issues are not black and white. Rather than benefit from an intelligent essay readers were treated to “We are completely right while you are completely wrong.” There is already too much of that attitude in this country.
