A man driving a stolen car allegedly fired shots at pursuing deputies Wednesday before the suspect and a female passenger were apprehended.

Cripple Creek officers tried to stop a stolen vehicle about 1 p.m., according to a Teller County Sheriff’s Office news release. The driver instead drove north on County Road 1. Just south of Evergreen Station, a deputy put stop sticks in the road to blow out the vehicle’s tires.

As the vehicle drove over the device, the driver fired shots from a handgun at the deputy. The deputy was not hit, and the vehicle kept going north before it got on County Road 11, toward Guffey.

The driver continued to shoot at pursuing officers, but the vehicle, with three flat tires, eventually came to a stop.

Austen Adams, 26, and Tara Lynn Kennedy Tarasi, 18, were taken into custody.

A stolen semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said. Officers did not return fire during the incident. There were no injuries.

The pair are being held at the Teller County jail. An investigation is ongoing.
