To measure the extent that corporate greed is enabled by willful disregard of the state constitution and coupled with official indifference focused on increasing state revenue, there’s no need to look further thanthis article.
Clearly the $400 million Monarch Casino project must rely on gambling revenue to ensure a profit from such a large investment. However, the Colorado Constitution in part states: “Limited gaming shall only be conducted in structures which conform … to the architectural styles and designs that were common to the areas prior to World War I … .” How does the proposed 23-story hotel/casino qualify as a historic structure when prior to World War I, the tallest building in the entire West was the 20 story Daniels & Fisher tower? Note: the Ameristar Casino across the street is 34 stories tall.
There’s much more in play than the implosion of a 19-year-old parking garage.
