Interview with Maureen Mika, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: After graduating college with my degree in fashion, working at different bridal shops, planning weddings and image consulting, I heard countless stories of women driving from shop to shop, frustrated because they would find the perfect gown but it was over their budget. It became clear to me that people needed a bridal store where they could find designer gowns at an affordable price. Once I moved out to Colorado I continued wedding fashion styling and continued to see the same problem in a new market. While with a bride at The Altar Bridal Consignment in Lakewood, I met Tiffany Freeman, the owner. We hit it off and became good friends. We spoke often about how I have always wanted to open a bridal consignment store of my own. Due to the success of her current store in Lakewood and the continued growth of the Denver area, we felt it only made sense to open a second store.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Affordability combined with luxury. We have dresses starting at $99 and go up to $3000. It doesn’t matter what your budget is, we have something for you. Also, style. We have different styles of dresses from every designer out there. For an example, we received 30 Cymbeline gowns from Paris that are for sale for a fraction of the price of the original retail.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: Being witness to a girl falling in love with a dress. When she tears up and her family begins to tear up, we do as well. It’s such a magical moment.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Having enough room for all of the dresses. On a daily basis we have women bringing dresses in to consign. Our dresses are new, sample dresses from bridal salons and pre-loved.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: When a customer walks in our door, they have the opportunity to work with a professional wedding fashion stylist. I can assist them with finding the perfect gown based around their style, body type and budget. I am also the head stylist for Novelty Bride Magazine based in Denver.
We offer in-house alterations. Alterations Plus is our in-house alterations company and they have specialized in bridal alterations for over 19 years.
My event planning company Lola Events Group is run from Altar Bridal South and specializes in Day of Coordination for all of those DIY weddings.
We will also have eight spaces for wedding industry clients to rent out and with that they can use our beautiful meeting room to meet with their wedding clients. Itap an amazing opportunity for wedding vendors as their company will be in front of actual brides on a constant basis in a bridal shop. That is not offered in any other bridal shop in Colorado.
