The Jan. 10, opening-night performance of the touring Broadway musical has been canceled due to road closures on Interstate 70, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts announced Tuesday.
Weather-related closures have stopped the trucks transporting the set to Denver from arriving in time, forcing “Fun Home’s” debut to be pushed back to Wednesday, Jan. 11. The show, which won five Tony Awards in 2015 including Best Musical, was slated to run Jan. 10-22 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.
Employees at the Denver Center’s box office hope to contact all ticket-holders for the Jan. 10 performance with instructions on what they can do about the cancellation by Thursday, Jan. 12, according to Heidi Bosk, senior public relations and promotions manager for the Denver Center’s Broadway and Cabaret programming.
“We were expecting a good crowd tonight, but still have availability for the rest of the run so thankfully are able to accommodate patrons into other performances,” Bosk said via e-mail.
The Ellie Caulkins Opera house seats 2,220 people, according to , and Bosk said the Jan. 10 performance was not sold out.
Ticket-holders can exchange for another date’s performance or “discuss other options,” according to the Denver Center, including refunds and tickets to other Denver Center shows. Ticket-holders for the Tuesday, Jan. 10, show can also call 303-893-4100 or contact their point of purchase for additional ticket options, including .
“Unforeseen circumstances out of our control, such as weather, has closed the roads before prohibiting the trucks from arriving in time,” Bosk said. “However, it is not common when you look at the number of shows we present throughout the year.”
“Fun Home” is based on artist Alison Bechdel’s graphic-novel memoir, with book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, music by Jeanine Tesori and direction by Sam Gold.
