The abrupt resignation of head coach has turned 2017 into a year of firsts for the Broncos, and general manager .

Vance Joseph, fresh off his first year as an NFL defensive coordinator, takes over as the first first-year head coach under Elway’s watch. Itap the start of something new for the Broncos with a goal that will never change.

Thursday, during Joseph’s introductory news conference, the two spoke of the Broncos’ fluid future that will include staffing and personnel changes in an effort to “reboot” but not rebuild.

For Elway, who’s known as much for his exploits as a player as his high expectations as a general manager, the changes figure to be more collaborative than in years past. He’s always had a say with his coaches. But his voice may be louder this time.

“I hope I can help him,” Elway said. “With the experience that I’ve had, not only as a player, but now in this role that I’ve been in as a GM, I’m hoping to help him tremendously.

“Vance knows what he wants on offense on his staff and as well as offensively. I can give input. Ultimately it is Vance’s staff.”

Elway made his first coaching hire less than two weeks after he took over when he appointed John Fox as the successor to Josh McDaniels. Four years and four AFC West titles later, Kubiak made his Denver return after Fox and the Broncos parted ways. Both arrived with years of head-coaching experience, in Carolina for Fox (2002-10) and in Houston for Kubiak (2006-13).

Joseph, the defensive coordinator with Miami this past season, arrives with none. Elway said Joseph will have to “grow on the run.”

But he’s not starting from scratch.

“The positions that he’s been in, he’s been a sounding board for the head guy,” Elway said. “He’s been in those conversations. I think he’s gained tremendous experience being in those conversations. Even though he was not the head coach, he had been in those conversations about what it takes and conversations that are going to confront you in those positions.”

Having Elway as a general manager ensures support but also pressure — support to help win and pressure to win.

Joseph said he appreciates both.

“He’s a proven winner, and I will use John as my resource, from players to coaches to scheduling to anything — how we travel,” Joseph said. “I’m happy John is here. Thatap going to be a great resource.”
